The most ideal furnace and kiln is to use the least fuel, at least the refractory materials, put in the minimum of labor, as many of the material is heated to a uniform temperature. The key lies in the efficient operation of the furnace and kiln with minimal excess air for complete combustion of the fuel. And other combustion equipment such as boilers (efficiency higher than 90%), compare to the relatively low efficiency of the furnace (lower to 7%). This is due to the higher operating temperature caused by the furnace and kiln.
